Field Data Collection

Trapping data is acquired at the time of trap placement and at all subsequent trap inspections. 90,000 plus pheromone traps are deployed annually by state and federal cooperators. Field maps produced from digital quadrangle base maps assist trappers with trap placement and inspection. GPS units are utilized for navigation to intended trap sites and are additionally used for data collection. The next generation of navigation /data collection device, called the Trapper Gadget, is being used in several of the cooperating states.
Milk Carton and Delta style pheromone traps are used to catch male gypsy moths during periods of moth flight. Traps are either placed and inspected using a Garmin V gps receiver or the Trapper Gadget.
The Trapper Gadget is a PDA-style handheld device operating on the Windows Mobile OS platform. The device is used for navigating to intended trap locations, as well as a data logger.
The Garmin V gps receiver is currently deployed to all 10 cooperating states. The project deploys approximately 300 units to assist with placing over 90,000 traps. The units are a mapping GPS unit and trapper can use detailed road data to assist in locating intended trap locations.
